How The Course Works
Knowledge Development
You’ll review the Emergency First Response curriculum, teaching philosophy and instructor responsibilities. You’ll also learn how to present information clearly and create an enjoyable learning environment.
Teaching Practice
The majority of the course focuses on practical teaching. You’ll present short lessons, demonstrate skills, coach participants and receive personalised feedback from your Course Director.
Instructor Assessment
Throughout the programme you’ll be assessed on your teaching ability, professionalism and ability to deliver Emergency First Response courses safely and effectively.
Prerequisites
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Meet the current Emergency First Response Instructor prerequisites published by PADI.
- Hold a current qualifying CPR and first aid certification that satisfies the programme requirements.
- Complete the required participant paperwork.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be a scuba instructor?
No. However, you must meet the current prerequisites for the Emergency First Response Instructor programme. Many candidates complete the course while preparing for the PADI Instructor Development Course.
Is this required for becoming a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor?
Emergency First Response Instructor is an important part of the professional pathway and is normally completed before or during an Instructor Development Course. Please refer to the current PADI Instructor requirements or contact us for guidance based on your circumstances.
Will I practise teaching?
Yes. Most of the course focuses on developing practical teaching skills through presentations, demonstrations and coaching sessions.
Can I teach non-divers?
Yes. Emergency First Response programmes are designed for both divers and non-divers.
What should I do after this course?
Most candidates continue directly into the Instructor Development Course (IDC) and Instructor Examination (IE). Already-qualified instructors may simply begin teaching Emergency First Response programmes after meeting the relevant administrative requirements.
