IDEST Compressor Maintenance Course
Operate and maintain a breathing air compressor safely
A course for the people who actually run the compressor: filling cylinders, checking filters, keeping the logs.
The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 require employers to make sure staff operating a compressor are competent to do so. This course is how a dive centre or club evidences that.
Training is delivered by Wiltshire Scuba, an IDEST training centre (TC021) and IDEST test centre D7, in our own working workshop.

What You Will Be Able To Do
On completing the course you will be able to:
- Inspect the compressor room
- Inspect the compressor, including draining it
- Complete a daily fill log
- Check the condition of the filters
- Confirm a cylinder is in test before you connect it
- Connect cylinders and fit leashes safely
- Explain what the pressure maintaining valve does
- Fill and disconnect cylinders safely
What The Course Covers
- A short history of the compressor
- The technician’s responsibilities, and the hazards
- Heat, and operating safely
- What must happen before filling, and the physics behind it
- Air composition and lubricating oil
- Operation, and the regulators involved
- Adapters, whips, gauges and DIN connections
- Pressure relief valves, over pressure valves and flow limiting
- The operator’s responsibilities
Practical Workshop Training
The course runs partly as a presentation and partly in the workshop, and the workshop element is the point of it. You will do the work yourself rather than watch it being done.
Class sizes are small, so you get individual coaching rather than a demonstration from the back of a room.
Entry Requirements
No previous compressor qualification is required.
A basic understanding of scuba equipment and workshop practice is helpful.

Common Questions
Does this satisfy our duty under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations?
It provides the competency training an employer needs to evidence for staff operating a compressor. Your own written scheme of examination and maintenance regime are separate duties.
Is it about servicing the compressor or running it?
Mostly running it safely and maintaining it day to day: checks, filters, logs, filling and disconnecting.
Do I need to be a diver?
No.
