IDEST Technician Inspection Course – Part 2
Hydrostatic testing of diving and breathing gas cylinders
Part 2 is the hydrostatic testing course. It is what allows a test centre to offer cylinder testing to its customers.
The course works to BS EN 1968:2002 and BS EN 1902:2002, and covers the test itself, the calculations, and the certification that follows it.
Training is delivered by Wiltshire Scuba, an IDEST training centre (TC021) and IDEST test centre D7, in our own working workshop.

What You Will Be Able To Do
On completing the course you will be able to:
- Check cylinder and valve threads confidently and competently
- Carry out a hydrostatic test and determine permanent set
- Stamp and label a cylinder to the applicable ISO standard
- Issue a test certificate for a cylinder that passes
What The Course Covers
- Methods of cylinder testing
- The tools and equipment required
- Checking the test system works, and fault-finding when it does not
- Preparing the test chamber
- Checking for pressure tightness
- Carrying out the hydraulic test
- Calculating the result from the readings
- Removing the cylinder from the chamber
- Drying, and inspection after drying
- Replacing and torquing the valve
- Stamping, labelling and completing the documentation
Practical Workshop Training
The course runs partly as a presentation and partly in the workshop, and the workshop element is the point of it. You will do the work yourself rather than watch it being done.
Class sizes are small, so you get individual coaching rather than a demonstration from the back of a room.
Entry Requirements
You must have completed the IDEST Technician Inspection Course Part 1 before attending Part 2.
If you took Part 1 elsewhere that is fine — tell us when you book.

Common Questions
Is this more visual inspection?
No. Part 1 is visual inspection; Part 2 is hydrostatic testing. They are different pieces of work and Part 2 needs its own equipment.
Do I need Part 1 first?
Yes. Part 1 is a prerequisite.
Which standards does it work to?
BS EN 1968:2002 and BS EN 1902:2002.
